DATA FROM GIGGL.™ 30-DAY PILOT

CASEVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL IN CASEVILLE, MI

MAY 4 - JUNE 4, 2023

 

Significant Decrease In School Clinic Visits (From 654 to 409).  According to Cristina Klaiber, RN, Scheurer Wellness Clinic School Nurse, there was a significant decrease in clinic visits from May 4 to June 4, 2022, with a total of 654 visits, compared to May 4 to June 4, 2023, where the number reduced to 409. This represents a remarkable 46% decline, indicating the positive impact on the health and wellness of our students.

 

Significant Reduction In Behavioral Offenses Per Day For Both Grades 6-12 (42.7%) & Grades K-5 (27.5%). Data provided by Joe Pratt, LMSW SSW, School Social Worker from the Huron Intermediate School District, revealed a significant reduction in behavioral offenses per day for both grades 6-12 (42.7%) and grades K-5 (27.5%) from April 2023 to May 2023.

 

During the second week of the pilot, the GIGGL.™ Emoticon (SEL) Survey conveyed a sense of "worry" amongst 20% of student participants. Once addressed from this feedback, there was a 12% increase in "relief" a few days later. Collection of data was anonymous and participants were identified by grade and occupation only.

 

 

Note:  Improvements were achieved without any other changes except for the introduction of the GIGGL.™ AM & PM Sessions.

Noticeable Behavioral Changes In My Fourth & Fifth Grade Students

One notable observation was the positive impact the program had on the students' behavior throughout the day. They exhibited increased calmness during transitions, such as lining up at the end of the day. This was particularly noticeable in the fifth-grade group, which tends to struggle with emotional regulation. The program seemed to help them regulate their emotions and be better prepared to focus on their tasks.

 

Health Benefits Observed Through My Own Smart Watch 

I monitored my pulse using my smartwatch before and after the sessions, and I noticed a significant reduction in my heart rate. I was very surprised and excited to see this change for myself. 

 

Newly Discovered 'Shared Experience' Within The Classroom And At Home

Right after our morning GIGGL.™, my students would ask me to take out our map and follow the path to see where we had traveled. We enjoyed those moments together of exploration and deeper conversation. I know other teachers have also had this experience with their students.

 

I especially enjoyed seeing all the places in Michigan. Many of our students and teachers never leave Huron County. One student shared that his Mom always asks him where GIGGL.™ took him today.

 

The social studies aspect of the program was wonderful!

 

The 'magic sauce' is opening up their minds with the giggling. It puts the kids at ease. From when I started teaching to now, it is much harder to reach a lot of kids. And  so, to take a crack at it with GIGGL.™ and laugh, I think you're onto something. I really do.

Another teacher even utilized the morning video to alleviate a headache, with successful results in week two of the pilot. 

The GIGGL.™ experience has cultivated a new “common emotional language” between teachers and their students.

Through GIGGL.™, teachers and students can engage in meaningful conversations about their emotions and coping strategies. For instance, a teacher recently had a discussion with an anxious student, where they explored specific elements of the GIGGL.™ Session that induced a sense of calm. Both students and teachers shared feelings of "relief" and "calm" within the first week of the pilot. 

Both teachers and students overwhelmingly expressed feeling "better in their bodies, calmer, and more relaxed" at the end of the first week. Participants also reported feeling energized in the morning.

Several teachers and students were logging onto GIGGL.™ during evenings and weekends for additional support.

The engagement with the GIGGL.™ program extends beyond regular school hours, as both teachers and students actively access the videos outside the classroom. This level of participation highlights the program's effectiveness and its potential as a crucial resource for communities with limited access to mental health support. They value the sessions for their impact on student well-being as well as their ability to support the mental well-being of the staff.

After the pilot’s completion, students and teachers continued to log onto GIGGL.™
